The Obelisk

This monument, marked with an N, commemorates that Napoleon Bonaparte ordered the digging of the Rhône-Rhine canal in 1802.

Work began in 1804 and was completed in 1834.

The surrounding neighborhood is named after an island called La Rondelle, built in 1828.

This island was removed in the 1960s during the canal's widening to accommodate larger vessels.
