The Old Redoubt Shelter

This concrete shelter, constructed between 1931 and 1932, stands near a crossroads just about ten meters from the Muehlrhein, a watercourse running parallel to the Rhine. Located over 500 meters from the river, its role was to protect the rear of the casemates on the riverbank by preventing infiltrating patrols from bypassing them after crossing the Rhine upstream or downstream. It benefited from natural firing lines provided by the Rhine road and the Muehlrhein river.

This concrete parallelepiped, approximately 200 m³ in volume, was designed to house a combat group of about ten men. These soldiers conducted patrols or, in case of combat, positioned themselves outside with machine guns or mortars. Its defensive armament was limited to two machine guns supplied with a total of 10,000 rounds, installed in a turret and a single caponier firing slot. With such equipment, the shelter could not claim a major role in battle. It therefore mainly served as a command post and telephone exchange for the Drusenheim sector.

This structure is a closed casemate, visible only from the outside. It can be opened occasionally.
