The Rhine Baths

Founded in 1875 by Fritz Kretz at the end of the Nouveau Bassin, these outdoor baths drew their water from the Ill River and, via the connecting canal, from the Rhône-Rhine canal. This unique feature gave them their name. They were the first public baths of this kind in Mulhouse, featuring two separate pools: one reserved for men, the other for women.

A restaurant with a summer garden, open year-round, complemented the facilities.

They were very popular, attracting between 20,000 and 30,000 visitors annually.

In 1882, they were even served by Mulhouse's first tram line.

Today, these baths are no longer in use.
