The Rhône-Rhine Canal

Between 1810 and 1830, a canal was constructed in an area of the city that was then occupied by gardens.

Intended for industrial use, it facilitated the transport of goods, especially coal, which was essential for powering the steam engines of Mulhouse's factories. This canal helped shape an urban environment defined by commerce.

Its unloading basin was quickly expanded before being abandoned in favor of a new basin built to the east of the city.

Subsequently, the original basin was partially, then completely filled in, giving rise to a green space that still exists today.
