The Rock of La Chatte Pendue

Perched at 899 meters above sea level, the summit of La Chatte Pendue overlooks the Vosges.

An orientation table installed by the Strasbourg Vosgian Club allows visitors to admire an exceptional panorama: the Champ du Feu massif, the Climont, the Donon, and on clear days, the outlines of the Black Forest in Germany.

But it is above all its enigmatic name that captivates visitors.

Formerly called "Pirre hhatte pendaïe" (High Hanging Stone), it is said to have undergone a linguistic deformation over the centuries. The guttural pronunciation of the "H" or transcription errors by surveyors gradually transformed "hhatte" into "chatte," giving rise to this unusual name that still fuels many interpretations today.
