The Ruins of Saint Blaise Church

At the edge of the village of Leimbach, heading towards Rammersmatt in the Gottesthal valley, the cemetery occupies the site of the former Saint Blaise Church. This place of worship, first mentioned in 1181 among the possessions of the Oelenberg convent and later under the lordship of Thann, still bears traces of its medieval past, such as its Romanesque porch. Destroyed by Swiss mercenaries in 1468, the church was rebuilt shortly after and restored several times in the 18th century. However, World War I dealt a fatal blow to the building, which was ultimately replaced by a new church in 1925. Despite these changes, the site's history remains marked by its religious purpose, notably through the annual Saint Blaise pilgrimage held every February to invoke protection against throat ailments.
