The Shafts of the Saint-Nicolas Mine
The shafts once dug for mining operations served several essential functions. Some, large in size, provided direct access to the underground work sites and allowed for the extraction of materials. Others, called ventilation shafts, ensured the circulation of air vital for the miners. Finally, shafts equipped with pumps were used to remove water that seeped into the tunnels.
These structures are now associated with the Saint-Nicolas Mine, a site open for visits throughout the year.
Exploring these historically rich places, visitors can look up towards the surface and admire the daylight, a result of the miners' hard work who shaped these galleries.
