The Slopes of Vieil-Armand
At the entrance to the Wine Route, the communes of Cernay, Steinbach, Uffholtz, and Wattwiller host a 150-hectare Alsace appellation vineyard, cultivated continuously for over twelve centuries. Nestled at the foot of the Hartmannswillerkopf, this estate stretches across the foothills of the Vosges, where clay-marls and calcareous-sandy soils, facing east and south on gentle slopes, provide ideal conditions for the vines.
All grape varieties are successfully grown here, but pinot noir, gewurztraminer, pinot gris, and riesling particularly express their finesse and distinctiveness.
Destroyed during the First World War, this vineyard was rebuilt by determined winemakers, bringing life back to these historically rich hillsides. To discover its beauty, two wine trails—one in Steinbach and another between Uffholtz and Wattwiller—invite visitors to stroll through landscapes shaped by time and human hands.
