The Source of the Doller

Kirchberg gets its name from its church perched on a terminal moraine. Nearby, the source of the Doller is located at Fennematt, at an altitude of 922 meters. After an initial capture at the beginning of the 20th century, it was redeveloped in 1995. This spring gives rise to the Doller, the southernmost river descending from the Alsatian side of the Vosges. It supplies water to more than five municipalities in Haut-Rhin, including Mulhouse. The water, of exceptional quality, is distributed untreated to the population. The name of the river, Doller, is the oldest associated with it. Its Celtic, even pre-Celtic origin, refers to a meaning close to "the flowing water," as evidenced by the commonly accepted etymology, "die Oller."
