The Source of the Ill
The Ill originates in the heart of the Alsatian Jura, in Winkel, specifically at a place called Illensprung, at an altitude of 600 meters.
This watercourse, the true backbone of Alsace, stretches over 217 kilometers before joining the Rhine at Gambsheim, north of Strasbourg.
Since May 2003, a work by artist Anne Rochette has framed this nascent source. For her, the rounded shapes of her sculptures evoke both the surrounding hills and femininity, often associated with springs in folk art.
Higher up, ten large pebbles symbolize drops of water, reminding us that the birth of a river is always diffuse and multiple.
The source site, accessible by car, is perfect for walks and hikes. Take the opportunity to also explore the beech alley of Winkel, the Saint-Laurent church, and the Warth chapel.
