The Steinbaechlein at DMC
The Doller, whose name means "the stream of stones," originates north of Mulhouse. Since the Middle Ages, this watercourse has played a crucial role by powering numerous mills along its route. In the early 19th century, it contributed to the prosperity of local industrialists who exploited the exceptional quality of its waters for bleaching and dyeing fabrics. A true concentration of factories then established itself along its bed, from the Hofer spinning mill (now Kennedy College) to the DMC facilities. Although chemical bleaching became widespread from the 1830s, DMC continued to use the Doller's water to supply its pond.
