The Summit Cross of Hartmannswillerkopf
Erected at the summit of the Hartmannswillerkopf, at an altitude of 956 meters, this imposing concrete cross stands 22 meters tall. It is part of a monumental complex that also includes the crypt, the altar of the homeland, and the necropolis.
Inaugurated on September 21, 1930, it aligns perfectly with the altar of the homeland of the National Monument as well as with the flagpole of the tricolor flag at the National Necropolis.
From its summit, overlooking the battlefield, it offers an unobstructed view over the entire Alsace plain and even beyond the Rhine. It was first illuminated on the night of November 10 to 11, 1936, and since then it shines every evening at nightfall.
