The Tomb Alley in the Koenigshoffen District
At the entrance to the Koenigshoffen district, near the Parc des Romains tram stop, an educational and landscaped area was created in 2020 to showcase exceptional archaeological discoveries. These remains reveal part of a tomb alley linked to the first Roman occupation of Strasbourg, dating from the 1st and 2nd centuries AD.
The layout includes several tangible elements to aid understanding. The ground plan of the funerary monuments is marked by urban furniture, while a bronze model at a 1/25 scale allows visualization of the whole. The names of the legionnaires whose funerary steles were found are engraved on ground plaques placed exactly where they were discovered.
To complete this immersion, trees and perennial plants have been planted. They represent varieties used in Roman times, whether in cooking, perfumery, dyeing, or medicine. This space thus offers a window into the daily life and practices of Strasbourg’s first Roman inhabitants.
