The Vodou Castle

The Vodou Castle is a unique private museum located in a water tower from 1878 in Strasbourg. It houses the world's largest collection of West African Vodou objects, all originating from religious practices. These pieces, numbering over 1400, belong to the museum's founders, Marc and Marie Luce Arbogast. Vodou, a religion originating from West Africa, specifically the Kingdom of Dahomey, structures major life events and seeks to restore harmony between the visible world and that of deities and ancestors. It relies on rituals, ceremonies, and cult objects like those displayed here, representing major figures such as Hébiéso, Mami Wata, or Aguin. The museum offers a new temporary exhibition each year. Accessible to children from 4 years old, it welcomes individual visitors daily from 2 pm to 6 pm, with audio-guided tours available in French, German, English, Spanish, or Turkish. It is possible to rent a virtual reality headset during opening hours, subject to availability and with an identity deposit. Groups of more than 10 people can book guided tours in several languages, including evening visits or with tastings, by reservation at least two weeks in advance.
