The Wild Thur

Between Vieux-Thann and Cernay, the Thur flows without reinforced banks or artificial barriers, allowing the river to meander naturally. It branches into several arms, winds between gravel islets, and floods its surroundings during high waters, sometimes reactivating old riverbeds. These natural variations shape a dynamic and preserved landscape.

Before crossing Cernay, some developments have been made, including a concrete fish slide integrated into a fish pass. This structure facilitates fish movement, essential for population balance (spawning, food search, etc.).

The vegetation is rich and varied: herbaceous plants, shrubs like elderberries, hawthorns, or spindle trees, draped with vines (clematis), as well as trees of different heights (black alders, maples, old black poplars). This dense plant cover provides shelter for wildlife and creates many ecological niches. The black poplar, in particular, represents a genetic heritage to preserve.

This natural and protected area deserves respect. Information panels provide additional details on site.
