Vergers de Belle-Ile

The Vergers de Belle-Île are a remarkable natural and historical site located south of the commune of Ensisheim in Alsace. This place combines preserved ecological heritage with ancient Alsatian agricultural traditions, notably fruit tree cultivation.

The area is part of the "orchards and reed beds of the Ill alluvial zone at Ensisheim," classified as a Natural Area of Ecological, Faunistic and Floristic Interest (ZNIEFF) for its exceptional biodiversity.

It features a high concentration of tall fruit trees, mainly apple trees, as well as meadows and wetlands that host diverse fauna and flora.

The name "Belle-Île" poetically evokes the bucolic landscape formed by the nearby arms of the Ill River.

Crossed by the Quatelbach, a historic irrigation canal, this area is also marked by a network of old masonry canals and sluices, remnants of a traditional system now abandoned but whose traces remain visible and appreciated during discovery tours.
