VNF - Main Lock of Niffer
Built over ten years ago by the Compagnie Nationale du Rhône, the main lock of Niffer was part of the project to upgrade the Rhine-Rhône connection to large gauge, which was abandoned in 1997 after completing the first section between Niffer and Mulhouse.
Operating via computerized control, this lock allows the passage of convoys exceeding 180 meters in length and 3,000 tons of freight, overcoming a drop of more than five meters to or from the port of Mulhouse Ile-Napoléon.
Pleasure boats or traditional barges, measuring 38.50 meters, can continue their journey beyond Mulhouse on the southern branch of the Rhône-Rhine canal, which is small gauge.
Just nearby, the lock known as "Le Corbusier," parallel to the main lock, remains in service.
