Volcanic Forest and Vogelsteine Nature Reserve

The Volcanic Forest stretches across the Rossberg massif, dominated by the impressive Vogelsteine rocks reaching 1164 meters.

This natural site is characterized by rugged terrain with steep slopes, scree corridors, and rocky outcrops, creating a unique mosaic of natural habitats between 700 and 1200 meters altitude.

The preservation of this area supports remarkable biodiversity, home to emblematic species such as chamois, Eurasian lynx, peregrine falcon, and black woodpecker.

The flora is equally rich, featuring plants like lady's mantle and sea holly, along with around a hundred species of mushrooms. Several hiking trails lead here from Wegscheid, marked by blue triangular or yellow round signs.

For guided exploration, the team at the House of Earth and Geology offers accompanied hikes into the heart of this fascinating site.
