Volgelsheim
This village first appears in records in 739 under the name Folcoaldeshain.
In 1674, it was devastated by a fire caused by English troops.
After the Treaty of Ryswick in 1697, Fort Mortier was reoriented eastward to strengthen the defense of the Rhine border.
In 1870, it endured a siege by German troops and surrendered after six days of intense bombardment.
In September 1939, the population was evacuated to Lot-et-Garonne in anticipation of upcoming conflicts.
Among its monuments are the late 19th-century former train station, where Jean Renoir's 1937 film "La Grande Illusion" was shot. Renovated in 1993, it now houses the headquarters of the Rhine Tourist Railway. Railway equipment is preserved at the CFTR depot, located at the Rhine Port. The village also features a monument dedicated to General Beaupuy and Fort Mortier, built in 1668.
