Wagenbourg Castle
Wagenbourg Castle is the last surviving fortress of the seven medieval castles built in the Noble Valley. Constructed around the late 15th or early 16th century by the Stoer de Stoerenbourg family, it defended the valley's entrance. Its large corner tower, still visible today, features bossed loopholes and narrow molded windows. Once surrounded by a moat about twenty meters wide, the moat has been filled in and the drawbridge long gone. In the 16th century, the castle changed hands several times: first acquired by Jacob Koerner, secretary to the Bishop of Strasbourg, then passed by marriage to the noble Breitenlandenberg family around 1540. Originating from the Zurich region, they expanded the building and kept it until the Revolution. Today, Wagenbourg Castle belongs to a private vineyard located in the village.
