Wasenbourg Castle

Listed as a historic monument since December 6, 1898, this Alsatian site is distinguished by an exceptional Gothic window composed of 9 lancets and 7 oculi, a unique arrangement in Alsace framed within a lowered arch. The restored mullions highlight this remarkable architecture. A massive shield wall, 4 meters thick, protects the inner courtyard and the adjoining residence. Inside the residence, a frieze decorated with a human head dating from the 13th century draws visitors' attention. A commemorative plaque marks Goethe's visit in 1771. Behind the ruins, remains of a Gallo-Roman temple dedicated to Mercury are visible. Visitors can explore the two floors of the residence. A Roman bas-relief depicting Mercury, originating from the castle, is exhibited at the Archaeology House in Niederbronn-les-Bains.
