Way of the Cross with 15 Stations

This Way of the Cross, also called a calvary, is distinguished by its 15 stations instead of the traditional 14. Each station is adorned with a large polychrome bas-relief illustrating the stages of the Passion of Christ, from his condemnation to his burial. The term calvary refers to the hill Jesus climbed carrying his cross before being crucified.

The entire site is bordered by a low wall of cut stone and opens with an entrance marked by an imposing crucifix. Its style is neo-classical, and it was listed as a historic monument in 1938. This site was erected in 1789, during the French Revolution, under the initiative of the priest Jean-Etienne Straubhar.

Beyond its spiritual significance, the calvary offers a remarkable viewpoint over the surrounding valley and the locality of Heiligenberg.
