Werde Castle on the banks of the Ill
Southeast of the village of Matzenheim, in the hamlet of Woerth, there once stood a castle of which an imposing comital enclosure, some earthworks, and a vaulted cellar beneath the foundations remain. Built in 1185, this estate belonged to the Counts of Werde, also Landgraves of Alsace, documented since the 12th century. Over the centuries, several families succeeded one another at its head before it was remodeled in the 17th century to become a more comfortable residence. Today, after a complete renovation and careful decoration, the castle is managed by the Million family. They offer guest rooms, giving visitors the opportunity to stay in a setting that is both historic and enchanting.
