Windstein

Nestled at the bottom of an Alsatian valley, the small village of Windstein has only about a hundred inhabitants. Perched on its heights, the Old Windstein and New Windstein, two medieval castles, watch over the region. These buildings are iconic stops on the Alsace Castle Trail, inviting visitors to discover their history and impressive architecture.

Nearby, the Maginot Line long-distance hiking trail winds through the landscapes. This route connects Rœschwoog in Northern Alsace to Bitche in Moselle, passing through historically significant sites. It notably allows visitors to observe bunkers from the Second World War scattered around Windstein. These remnants recall a period marked by conflict while offering visitors a preserved natural setting.

Between medieval heritage and traces of recent history, Windstein appeals to hiking and climbing enthusiasts. The village and its surroundings are an ideal destination for those seeking authentic landscapes and places rich in memory.
