Witches' Tower

The Niedertor, popularly nicknamed the "Witches' Tower," is an old low gate dating back to 1216. It marks the eastern entrance of Colmar's first fortified enclosure. Its upper floors notably served as a detention place, especially in the 17th century, where women accused of witchcraft were imprisoned before their execution. In 1774, the ground floor housed a saltpeter workshop as well as a storage for equipment related to the fortifications service. Today, the tower is only visible from the outside.
