Witches' Tower

The Witches' Tower is a Gothic gate built in the 15th century and remodeled in 1830. Its current roof is recent. Considered one of the most beautiful gates in Alsace, it is often depicted in artworks such as marquetry and drawings by Hansi and Bernard Buffet. The tower gets its name from the witch trials that took place in Châtenois, as in many other towns, which led to the execution of several people accused of magical practices. In 1870, it was hit by a cannonball during a conflict but only suffered minor damage. Today, it is only accessible from the outside.
