Wittich Infantry Regiment Memorial (3rd Hessian Regiment No. 83)
Dating from 1904, this monument consists of a bronze lion statue placed on a granite pedestal.
The lion, a symbol of strength and courage, crushes under its paws a sword, a flag, a helmet, and a rifle cannon, evoking victory and sacrifice.
The base bears inscriptions and coats of arms, as well as a dedication in German: "Der Erinnerung an die heldenmuetigen Kaempfe des Inf. Rgts v. Wittich (3. Kurhess.) Nr. 83 im Kriege gegen Frankreich 1870-71 und dem Andenken seiner Gefallenen geweiht…", honoring the heroic battles of the 3rd Hessian regiment of Wittich and the memory of its soldiers fallen during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871.
Created by sculptor H. Brandt of Kassel, the statue was inaugurated on August 6, 1904.
