Former Hospital - Media Library

The site was originally a Franciscan convent before being sold to the city of Colmar in 1543. The city converted it into a hospital, which was destroyed by lightning in 1735 and then rebuilt between 1736 and 1744 using stones from the old city fortifications. The building exemplifies 18th-century French architecture, characterized by the balance and simplicity of neoclassicism. At the end of the 16th century, its western part was dedicated to the military hospital, while the neighboring Saint-Matthieu church was divided to accommodate both the Protestant community of Colmar and serve as a Catholic chapel for the hospital. The military hospital was relocated in 1792, but the civil hospital remained until 1937, when it was replaced by the Pasteur hospital. After housing departments of the IUT, the buildings were restored and converted into a media library in 2012.
