Jewish Cemetery
From the 12th century, Jewish communities settled in Alsace. After the violence of 1349 in Strasbourg, Alsatian Judaism mainly moved to rural areas. It was in this context that the Jewish cemetery of Mackenheim appeared, first mentioned in 1608 under the name Judengarten, or "Garden of the Jews." Located in the heart of the Rhine forest, away from the village, this resting place was once accessible by water: graves from communities along the Rhine were transported there by boat. Today, the site is a listed historic monument. On site, QR codes provide additional information about the history of the Judengarten.
