Nouveau Quartier
Starting in 1827, on the outskirts of the old town, Mulhouse saw the birth of the Nouveau Quartier, a symbol of industrial success.
This urban planning project, entrusted to Strasbourg architects Stotz and Fries, is organized in a fan-shaped layout with axes converging towards a semi-circular square, the current Place de la République.
At the heart of this ensemble, a triangular garden, initially private, occupies the central space.
The Parisian inspiration is evident in the architecture of the buildings: on the ground floor, a gallery lined with arcades, and on the upper floor, balconies aligned in front of rigorously symmetrical windows.
This Empire style, tinged with Italianate neoclassicism, is unique in Alsace for its balance and sobriety.
The Place de la Bourse is closed off by an emblematic building, that of the Société Industrielle de Mulhouse, founded in 1826 by local industrialists to pool their knowledge and stimulate innovation. Nearby, a new business district is emerging, strengthening the economic identity of this part of the city.
