Old Guardhouse

Built on the site of the former Saint James chapel, documented as early as 1286 and briefly used as a town hall, the building was remodeled in 1575 for secular purposes. Above a vaulted ossuary, the ground floor housed a guardhouse, while the upper floor contained rooms. Between 1577 and 1582, a richly decorated loggia was added, forming with the portal a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture in the Upper Rhine. The building later served various functions: a market for nuts and oilseeds, a courthouse where magistrates pronounced sentences from the loggia, then a military housing office from 1860 before becoming a police station.
