Passage du Théâtre

The Passage du Théâtre follows the bed of part of the Mittelbach, one of the three streams that once surrounded the city before being filled in 1863. In 1867, the section connecting the Hôtel de Ville passage to rue du Sauvage was covered with a glass roof designed by architect Senaire. This covered passage, unique in Alsace in the 19th century, quickly became a lively commercial artery, hosting numerous shops over the years. Threatened with demolition several times during the 20th century, it also suffered an arson attack in the 1980s. After decades of challenges, it was fully renovated in 2019 to regain its former splendor.
