The Kammerzell House
The Kammerzell House, now associated with the grocer Kammerzell, its 19th-century owner, actually owes its current appearance to Martin Braun, a cheese merchant who acquired it in 1571. He preserved only the stone ground floor dating from 1467 and had the building rebuilt between 1589 and 1591 with three overhanging stories topped by three attic floors. The façade, richly decorated, draws inspiration from the Bible, Greco-Roman antiquity, and the Middle Ages, reflecting the cultural influences of a 16th-century Strasbourg bourgeois. A restoration campaign in 1892 darkened the overall appearance, but the decoration retains its full testimonial value. Inside, visitors can admire remarkable murals by Leo Schnug, painted around 1905.
